The VGSC548 is a retired 48-inch self-cleaning gas range from the 5 Series. It carries a 30,000 BTU U-shaped oven burner, a Gourmet-Glo infrared broiler and the Pro Sealed Burner System with 15,000 BTU burners, and it was meant for a kitchen with room for a large cooking wall.
At this size, the oven’s U-shaped burner and its igniter work hard, and a weak igniter delays everything else. We also look at the self-clean lock and at the sealed burner caps for spill damage.
We start with the burners and the oven burner, then move on to the lock and the broiler. Gas smell? Leave through the nearest door and phone the gas utility. The price is in writing first, and workmanship is covered for 30 days.
The oven takes much longer than before to start heating. We measure the igniter's current draw, and a low reading confirms it is no longer strong enough to open the gas valve reliably.
The door lock or the temperature sensor may be reporting wrongly. We test both, and we also check the door seal, because a poor seal can end the cycle.
It is the gas burner under the oven floor, bent into a U so the flame spreads heat across the cavity. When baking is uneven, we check its flame pattern along its full length.
