The VDSC536 is an older Designer Series 36-inch freestanding dual fuel range with sealed gas burners, an electric convection oven and a display that gives problems as words. It is the 36-inch sibling of the VDSC548 and a common find in kitchens with a single, full-size oven.
The words on the display give us a head start. We note the message, test the part it names and check the wiring leading to it. On the cooktop, we lift each sealed burner, clean the base and dry it, then test the spark. The oven gets a temperature comparison, a lock test after self-clean and a check of the convection fan. A door seal that has aged is replaced when needed.
If gas is ever noticeable in the room, get out and call the gas utility. You are given the price in writing ahead of the work, and the repair is covered by a 30-day workmanship warranty.
It is easier to read, but the part it names still needs testing. We confirm the failure with a meter before any replacement. We then verify it by running the oven and watching for the same message.
Wait until the oven has cooled, then call us. We test the lock motor and switch, and free the latch without forcing the door. A free latch will allow normal use of the oven again.
Keep the burner base dry and the cap seated flat, and wipe spills quickly. We clean and test any burner that still struggles. A dry base and a seated cap give the best chance of a clean spark.
