On older Viking ERC built-in ovens such as the VGDO271 gas and VEDO273 electric, F1 is a control malfunction. On the VGSO166 gas oven, which uses a thermostat-timer, the same F1 means a shorted probe, a short in the oven temperature sensor circuit. Check which of the two ovens you own, because the same code points to different parts. The oven usually stops heating while F1 is shown.
1. Turn the oven off and let it cool. 2. Turn off the oven's breaker, and on a gas oven also close the gas supply to the range if you are comfortable doing so; if there is any gas smell, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside. 3. Restore power and see whether F1 returns. 4. If it does, call us.
Different Viking generations use the same label for different checks. On VGDO271 and VEDO273 it is the control, and on the VGSO166 it is a shorted probe circuit.
The model number is on the tag near the oven door frame. Tell us the number when you call so we can match the meaning.
The oven stops heating, so it is not an immediate danger. On gas models, any gas smell means leave the house and call the gas utility from outside.
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
