On older Viking ERC built-in ovens such as the VEDO273 electric and VGDO271 gas, F4 means the control detected a shorted sensor or a shorted sensor circuit. The standard check is the sensor resistance and the wiring that carries it. The oven cannot read its own temperature, so it stops heating and holds F4 on the display until the sensor circuit is corrected.
1. Turn off the oven and let it cool. 2. Turn off the breaker for a minute, then restore it. 3. Try a short bake at a low temperature. 4. If F4 returns, stop using the oven and call us. We check the sensor resistance with a meter; if you have a gas oven and smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside.
F3 on ERC ovens is an open sensor, while F4 is a shorted sensor. Both leave the control without a temperature, but the repair test is different for each.
Either one can cause a shorted circuit. We check the sensor resistance and the wiring before replacing parts, and we quote the price in writing before ordering anything.
It may light up and respond to keys, but it will not heat reliably. Do not rely on it for cooking until the shorted circuit has been repaired.
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
