After a Grease Fire on Your Viking Range: What to Do and What to Check

A kitchen flare-up can leave damage you cannot see. Here is what to do in the moment, and what a technician should inspect before you cook again.

Grease fires happen fast, often when a pan of oil gets too hot or a splash lands on a burner. Knowing the right response can protect your family, and knowing what to check afterward protects the range.

In the moment

  • Turn off the burner or oven if you can do so safely.
  • Slide a metal lid over the pan to cut off the air. Leave it in place until everything is cool.
  • Never use water. It spreads burning grease.
  • Never carry a burning pan to the sink.
  • If the fire is spreading, get everyone out and call 911.

Baking soda on a small flame can help, but flour and sugar can make it worse. Keep a kitchen-rated extinguisher within reach, and make sure everyone in the house knows where it is.

What can be damaged

Even a short flare-up can melt wiring insulation near the control panel, warp burner caps and grates, crack igniter housings, and char the knobs. In an oven fire, excessive heat may damage the sensor, door seal, and the lights. Soot and residue can also clog the small ports on gas burners and cause uneven flames later.

Signs that mean you should stop and call: a burning plastic smell after the fire is out, knobs or a display that behave oddly, burners that no longer light, or flames that look yellow and lazy.

Before you cook again

Once everything has cooled, clean away soot and grease with warm soapy water, and make sure the hood filter did not catch any of the grease. Then, if the fire reached the controls or oven, have a technician inspect the range. We check gas connections, wiring, burners, and the igniter system, then explain what is safe and what is not.
