On Viking 3 and 5 Series undercounter refrigeration with the electronic controller, including the VRCI5240G, VRDI5240D, VRCO5240D and FRCI1240G, a flashing P1 on the controller means the thermostat probe has failed. The probe is the temperature sensor the controller reads to decide when to cool. Without a valid reading the controller cannot regulate the compartment, so temperatures may drift warm or run cold until the probe is replaced.
1. Check the compartment with a household thermometer to see whether it is holding a safe temperature. 2. Move perishable items to another refrigerator if it is warm. 3. Turn the unit off at its switch or plug, wait one minute, and turn it back on. 4. Watch whether P1 returns within the hour. 5. If it does, leave the unit set as it is and call us.
It is a small temperature sensor inside the compartment. The controller reads it to decide when the compressor should run, so a bad probe upsets the whole cooling cycle.
Sometimes it keeps cooling by a fallback routine, but the temperature is no longer controlled well. Check it with a thermometer and protect the food while you wait for the repair.
Often in one visit, since the probe is a common part. We test it first, quote the price in writing, and the repair carries a 30-day workmanship warranty.
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
