On older Viking ERC ovens such as the VGDO271 and VEDO273, F2 means the oven went over temperature. On the VGSO166 gas oven, F2 means an open probe, a break in the RTD circuit. The same code has a different meaning on each platform, so the model number matters. In either case the oven shuts down heating and shows F2 on the display.
1. Turn the oven off and let it cool with the door closed. 2. Check that nothing is blocking the vents and that the door seal is intact. 3. Turn off the breaker for a minute, restore it, and try a bake at a modest temperature. 4. If F2 returns, stop using the oven; on a gas model, any gas smell means leave and call the gas utility from outside.
Treat it seriously. An oven that goes over temperature should not be used. Turn it off, let it cool, and call us before it runs again for any reason.
The probe circuit is broken, so the control gets no temperature reading at all. That is the F2 meaning on the VGSO166, and it is checked with a meter.
Check the model number on the tag. The VGDO271 and VEDO273 are ERC ovens, and the VGSO166 uses a thermostat-timer. Tell us the number when you call.
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
