What E:04 means

E:04 is a turbidity sensor error on current Viking VDWU and FDWU dishwashers in the 324, 524 and 724 series, including the WS versions. The turbidity sensor measures how cloudy the wash water is so the machine can decide how long to wash and rinse. When the sensor reports a problem, the E:04 icon shows and the cycle may stop or run on fixed settings.

Common causes of E:04

  • Turbidity sensor not reading
  • Sensor connection loose or damaged
  • Sensor dirty from detergent or hard-water film
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Switch the dishwasher off at the breaker for a minute and then back on. 2. Remove the filter at the bottom of the tub and rinse it. 3. Run a hot cycle with no dishes. 4. If E:04 shows again, call us. The sensor sits in the water path, so we do not recommend reaching for it yourself.

! Why to stop there
  • The sensor is in the water circuit and behind panels
  • A dirty sensor and a failed sensor look the same from the outside
  • We quote first in writing and cover our work with a 30-day warranty
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

E:04E:04 questions
What is a turbidity sensor?

It checks how cloudy the water is, which tells the machine how dirty the load is. With a bad sensor reading, the program cannot adjust properly.

Will cleaning the filter help?

A clean filter helps wash water flow, and a hot empty cycle can clear film. If E:04 returns after that, the sensor or its wiring needs to be tested.

Can I still wash dishes?

The machine may refuse to run or may stop part way. If it runs, results may vary, so we recommend having the sensor checked rather than guessing.
