Viking VGIC488 Classic Range Service
The VGIC488 is a retired Classic Series sealed burner range at 48 inches wide, the size chosen by owners who wanted a large cooktop and more than one oven cavity. It is a heavy range, so it normally stays put for its whole life, which makes the aging parts inside the more important to keep healthy.
On the cooktop, a sealed burner depends on a dry electrode and a free port. A pan that boils over can leave sugar or grease on both, and what you hear is the familiar click without a flame. In the oven, an igniter that has aged opens the gas valve slowly and bakes uneven from side to side.
We lift the burner caps, dry and clean the electrodes, then check each oven cavity with a thermometer. With a strong gas smell, do not flip any switches; leave and let the gas utility know from outside. We quote the price before work starts, and workmanship is warrantied for 30 days.
The spark module sends a spark to all burners when one is turned on, so a dirty electrode on a single burner can make it sound like all of them are failing. We find the wet or soiled one and clean it.
A small difference can come from placement, but a large one points to a worn sensor or igniter. We measure both cavities with a thermometer and tell you which one is out of range.
Replace it when it takes noticeably longer to light the oven, since it will eventually stop opening the valve. We test its draw during a visit and replace it only if it falls below specification.
