A rangetop is the cooking surface of a pro range set into the counter, with no oven underneath. Owners usually call us about burners that will not light, uneven flames, a stuck knob, or a griddle that heats unevenly.
In the order we see them across Houston homes.
Rangetops in the Viking line are built into counters in several widths, up to the full range size, with sealed or open burners and optional griddles or grill plates. Because every part sits in the open, they take the brunt of boil-overs and daily wiping.
In Houston kitchens we see the same pattern again and again: a sticky film from cooking oil in the humid air, burner caps that were put back crooked after cleaning, and igniter electrodes dulled by spills. A flame that looks fine but is slightly off can waste gas and scorch pans.
Our first check is a clean-and-relight of each burner, followed by a look at the igniter gap, the valve action and the gas connection under the counter.

A burner that lights and then drops out is often dealing with a dirty or damp port, a weak safety sensor or a gas flow problem. We clean it, test the sensor and check the valve before replacing any part.
Yes, with the unit cold and the knobs off, a soft brush or a straight pin clears most ports. Do not use a toothpick that can break off inside. If the flame is still uneven afterward, call us, because the problem may be in the valve.
A rangetop puts out a lot of heat and grease, so it needs a hood sized for it, and the make-up air has to be right. We can tell you whether your current hood is keeping pace, but the hood design itself is a job for your installer.
