What 9 flashes (with brief interval) means

Viking induction rangetops VIRT301 and VCRT301 flash nine times with a brief interval when the cookware is not compatible with induction. Induction heats only magnetic pans, so a pan made of aluminum, copper or glass without a magnetic base is not detected and the zone will not heat. Nine flashes is a cookware message, not a damaged rangetop, and it usually clears once a suitable pan is placed on the zone.

Common causes of 9 flashes (with brief interval)

  • Cookware without a magnetic base, such as aluminum, copper or glass
  • A pan too small for the zone, or placed off center
  • A warped or very thin pan bottom that does not sit flat
  • A zone sensor that no longer recognizes any pan, if every magnetic pan fails
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Switch the zone off and remove the pan. 2. Hold a magnet to the bottom of the pan. If it sticks firmly, the pan works on induction. 3. Center a flat pan of suitable size on the zone. 4. Wipe the glass and the pan bottom clean and dry. 5. If a good magnetic pan on every zone still gives nine flashes, call us.

! Why to stop there
  • Most nine-flash cases are solved with a different pan
  • A visit is useful only if proven magnetic cookware is rejected
  • Our time is better spent on cases where the rangetop itself is to blame
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

How can I tell if my pans work on induction?

Place a magnet on the bottom of the pan. If it holds firmly, the pan is magnetic and suitable. Many stainless pans work, while aluminum, copper and glass do not unless they have a magnetic base.

Why does it still flash with a magnetic pan?

The pan may be too small for the zone, off center, or warped so it does not sit flat. Try a flat pan that matches the ring size and center it.

When is it the rangetop?

If several magnetic, flat pans fail on every zone, we test the sensing circuit. We quote in writing first, and repairs carry a 30-day workmanship warranty.
