Trash Compactor Repair in Houston

A built-in trash compactor presses kitchen waste into a compact bag under a counter drawer. Owners report a ram that will not move, a drawer that jams, a motor that hums, or odors that cleaning does not remove.

01What goes wrong

Common trash compactor problems we fix

In the order we see them across Houston homes.

01

Ram will not move down or back up

02

Drawer sticks or will not slide out

03

Motor hums but the ram stays put

04

Drawer will not lock so the unit will not run

05

Strong odor remains after bag changes

06

Key switch or start button does nothing

Built-in compactors fit in a standard cabinet opening beside the dishwasher, with a pull-out drawer, a heavy ram and a lock that stops the ram unless the drawer is closed. A drive chain or screw pushes the ram, and a switch tells the motor when to stop.

In Houston kitchens the biggest enemies are moisture and spills. Wet trash corrodes the ram and the bin, bags tear and jam the drive, and drawer rails collect sticky residue that makes them drag. The heat of a Texas summer makes odors worse.

We first clear any jam and clean the drawer rails, then test the lock switch, the motor and the drive. If a part is worn we show it to you, with the price written down before we begin.

05Trash Compactor questions
Why does my compactor hum but not crush?

The motor may be running while a drive chain, gear or coupling is slipping, or the ram may be blocked by something stuck in the bag. We check for a jam and then test the drive.

Is it safe to put glass or cans in a compactor?

Follow your manual. Crushing glass can damage the ram and be unsafe to handle, and wet items or pressurized cans cause problems. A bag change after a spill also helps with the smell.

How can I reduce odors from my compactor?

Change the bag before it is full, wipe the drawer with a mild cleaner and use the charcoal filter if your unit has one. Odor that stays after that may mean residue in the bin that we can clean.
