Viking Electric Cooktop Element Turning On and Off by Itself

A radiant element that cycles on and off may be doing exactly what it should, or it may be warning you. Here is how to tell the difference.

Watching a glowing element click off in the middle of a simmer can be alarming. Many electric cooktops are built to cycle, but the pattern matters.

Normal cycling

At low and medium settings, an element does not stay at constant full power. It switches on and off to hold an average temperature. You may hear a soft click and see the glow fade and return. That is normal, especially when you are simmering.

Many cooktops also include a limiter that turns an element off briefly when the glass or the pan gets very hot. Using a pan that is much smaller than the element, or one with a warped base, can trigger it more often.

Cycling that points to a problem

  • An element that cycles off at the highest setting while a pan of cold water sits on it.
  • Glow that flickers rapidly instead of holding for several seconds.
  • One element acting differently from the others under the same pan.
  • A burning or electrical smell, or visible discoloration on the glass.

Those signs can mean a failing element, a loose connection, or an infinite switch that has lost its accuracy. They can also point to a cooling fan that is blocked beneath the cooktop, so check that nothing is stored against the underside if you can reach it safely.

Quick checks at home

  1. Use a flat-bottomed pan that matches the size of the element.
  2. Wipe the glass clean. Burned-on residue can trap heat and trigger the limiter.
  3. Try the same pan on another element to compare.

If the cycling continues, turn the cooktop off at the breaker and let us look at it. Cracks in the glass, melted wiring, or sparking all mean stop immediately. See our cooktop repair page, and we will confirm the cause, give a written price first, and include a 30-day workmanship warranty.
