Viking VQGI5420 42-Inch Built-In Grill
The VQGI5420 is a retired 42-inch built-in gas grill from the 5 Series, with a ProSear burner and a rotisserie. Set into an island, it offers more room than the 30-inch and 36-inch versions, and a longer row of burners to keep clean.
Our approach starts with sorting out single-burner problems from whole-grill ones. A weak flame at one position points to its ports and venturi; an uneven ProSear flame suggests carbon on the burner head or a marginal igniter. Corrosion on the rotisserie plug and receptacle is common in outdoor kitchens, and we replace it when needed.
A gas smell at a fitting calls for closing the supply and calling the utility from outside, after which we locate the leak. Hidden gas connections inside an island are checked with soap solution. Because the model is retired, we confirm parts before quoting, write the price in advance and give a 30-day warranty.
The ports or venturi tube of that burner are probably partly blocked. We clean them and compare the flame with its neighbors. One lazy burner is usually a cleaning job.
It can overheat or short, especially outdoors. We replace corroded plugs and receptacles and make sure the outlet is protected from moisture. Replacing the plug is inexpensive and removes a fire hazard.
We open the access panel, brush soap solution on each joint and watch for bubbles. It is the only reliable way to find a slow leak.
